Emirates unveils new smart flight tech to cut turbulence and boost comfort
Dubai airline’s multi-layered approach merges AI, real-time data, and pilot insights
DUBAI – Emirates has introduced a series of advanced technologies designed to reduce the impact of unexpected severe turbulence, ensuring a safer and smoother journey for passengers and crew.
As turbulence becomes an increasingly serious challenge for global aviation, the airline has taken a proactive, data-driven approach to forecast and manage turbulence more accurately across its global network.
The initiatives, launched last year, combine artificial intelligence, machine learning, and multiple real-time data sources to enhance turbulence prediction and improve in-flight decision-making. Emirates’ efforts have already led to a noticeable reduction in severe turbulence encounters, reflecting the airline’s commitment to operational safety and customer comfort.

Captain Hassan Alhammadi, Divisional Senior Vice President Flight Operations at Emirates, said: “We recognise that turbulence remains an ongoing challenge that cannot be completely eliminated, but we are committed to minimising its impact through advanced technologies and partnerships. While we cannot promise turbulence-free flights, we are seeing significant improvements as these systems mature.”
What makes Emirates’ approach different?
Unlike conventional forecasting methods, Emirates uses a multi-layered configuration that integrates SkyPath, Lido mPilot from Lufthansa Systems, and the IATA Turbulence Aware programme. Together, these technologies create a real-time turbulence monitoring system combining AI analytics, pilot feedback, and crowd-sourced flight data.

SkyPath, developed in collaboration with Emirates, employs AI and machine learning to identify turbulence that traditional radar may miss. Its system aggregates data from thousands of aircraft, using patented iPad accelerometer technology to convert in-flight motion into precise turbulence readings. By combining Eddy Dissipation Rate (EDR) data, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADSB) signals, and other inputs, SkyPath generates detailed turbulence predictions – even in remote regions or “clear air” conditions where conventional detection fails.
How does Lido mPilot enhance safety?
Emirates’ partnership with Lufthansa Systems provides pilots with an enhanced navigational tool called Lido mPilot. The customised mobile application delivers high-accuracy weather data, live cloud formations, and turbulence forecasts sourced from the German Weather Service. Through this integration, Emirates pilots gain improved situational awareness, enabling them to anticipate and avoid turbulent air masses during flight.
The airline continues to collaborate closely with the Lido team to expand data quality and global coverage. This collaboration forms part of Emirates’ broader strategy to merge cutting-edge meteorological intelligence with operational experience for more reliable forecasting.
What role does IATA play?
Since joining the IATA Turbulence Aware Programme last year, Emirates has been contributing real-time data from its extensive network across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The programme aggregates live reports from participating airlines, providing a global turbulence map that pilots can access mid-flight.
This integration allows Emirates crews to visualise turbulence zones directly on their electronic flight bag charts. With these live visualisations, pilots can make informed decisions in real time, optimising flight paths to enhance passenger comfort and improve fuel efficiency.
Through this comprehensive system, Emirates not only benefits from the shared data but also contributes valuable insights to the wider aviation community. The initiative exemplifies how collaboration, data sharing, and advanced technology can make modern air travel safer and smoother for all.
